Abstract :
Urban regeneration, as a key approach in the management of sustainable urban development, plays a pivotal role in addressing environmental, social and economic challenges. This paper focuses on integrating geotechnical research into urban regeneration processes to examine how to promote urban sustainability. Based on case studies from urban areas in Iran, China, Italy, Poland, the UK, Spain and Hong Kong, such as Bagherabad neighborhood in Rasht, Li e village in Guangzhou, Messina city in Italy, Croy in the UK, Barahona de Fresno in Spain, Shuguang factory in China and regeneration programs in Poland, it is shown that regeneration with a sustainable approach not only solves physical problems such as infrastructure deterioration, but also reduces seismic and environmental risks by utilizing geotechnical data. Geotechnical research, including soil sustainability assessment, material recycling, resilient geotechnical asset management, and digital technologies such as BIM and CIM, enable the design of integrated systems that are consistent with the principles of restorative regeneration and urban green infrastructure. This approach, with an emphasis on nature-based solutions (NBS) such as wetland restoration, urban forests, and green infrastructure, helps to increase the resilience of cities to climate change. The results indicate that the integration of these elements improves the quality of life of residents, reduces inequalities, and ensures sustainable development. It is suggested that policymakers focus on continuous monitoring, stakeholder participation, 5R strategies (rehabilitate, restore, conserve, reclaim, and rehabilitate) and new technologies to optimize regeneration models. Also, new techniques such as circulating mixing for uniform distribution of backfill in boreholes increase geotechnical sustainability in urban regeneration.
