Abstract :
Steel moment frame are widely used in seismically active areas due to their ductility and ability to dissipate large amounts of energy during earthquakes. One of the most common causes of collapse of such structures under earthquake loads is failure of beam-to-column connections. This failure can lead to structural failure and collapse of floors even if the entire structure does not collapse, highlighting the importance of addressing the issue of connections. Beam-to-column welded connections are a special type of connection. Connections in flexural frames consist of three parts: a beam, a column, and a connection spring. Each of these parameters can affect the seismic behavior of the connection and its failure.
The panel zone is a key parameter in the design of moment-resisting frame connections. It is a component of moment-resisting frames whose elastic behavior during an earthquake is of significant importance. In RBS connections, locally reducing the beam s cross-section near the column prevents stress concentration at the connection itself and shifts the location of plastic hinge formation away from the connection to a section of the beam closer to the column.
