Abstract :
Climate change is one of the most important global challenges of the 21st century, which has widespread impacts on the environment, economy, and human societies. Due to population density, industrial development, and high consumption of fossil fuels, cities are both the main source of greenhouse gas emissions and are highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. In the meantime, urban green space and sustainable design, as effective and natural tools, can play a vital role in reducing the negative effects of climate change and improving the quality of life of citizens. Urban green space includes parks, gardens, green boulevards, green roofs, and other spaces covered with plants that provide numerous ecosystem services. These services include reducing ambient temperature, absorbing carbon, improving air quality, managing urban runoff, and increasing biodiversity. On the other hand, sustainable design in urban planning, by observing environmental, economic, and social principles, enables the creation of resilient and environmentally friendly spaces and improves the quality of life of residents. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of the impact of green space and sustainable design on the development of urban spaces and the mitigation of climate change impacts. The present study, by analyzing published scientific studies, examines the benefits, challenges, and best practices of utilizing green space and sustainable design. The results show that the integration of these two approaches can mitigate the negative impacts of climate change, improve the health and well-being of citizens, and guide cities towards sustainable and climate change-resilient development.
