Abstract :
Hierarchical structures inspired by nature have recently attracted significant attention in materials science and metallurgy as one of the most promising emerging fields. This study reviews and analyzes the principles of natural design and the applications of nature-inspired metallic structures in advanced manufacturing techniques. Over millions of years of evolution, nature has developed optimized structures through multiscale material combinations and complex geometries. From the exceptionally strong and lightweight bones of birds to the high toughness shells of bivalves, these natural designs demonstrate principles that can be implemented in metallic structures. Modern additive manufacturing techniques, with their ability to precisely control the fabrication process, enable the production of intricate multiscale structures. This paper discusses the current challenges, future opportunities, and research directions in this field. Results suggest that the integration of biological design principles with advanced manufacturing technologies can lead to the development of a new generation of metallic materials with enhanced mechanical properties.
