Abstract :
Abstract Photography of historical buildings, transcending a mere physical recording or structural documentation, serves as a dynamic and influential medium in urban regeneration, destination image formation, marketing, and the development of sustainable tourism. In the current era of media saturation and visual culture dominance, the visual representation of architectural heritage plays a fundamental role in directing tourism flows, reinforcing place identity, and the semiotic reading of space. This study aims to explain and analyze the role of both professional (architectural) and amateur photography of historical monuments in enhancing urban branding and sustainable development, focusing on several iconic Iranian historical sites. The methodology of this research is descriptive-analytical, based on archival documents and aesthetic analysis of empirical photographs of selected monuments, including Nasir al-Mulk Mosque, Persepolis, Maqbarat al-Shoara, Tomb of Avicenna, the Blue Mosque of Tabriz, and the troglodytic village of Kandovan. The findings indicate that targeted photography—through conscious framing, play of light, and capturing geometric details—not only significantly stimulates travel motivation and tourists’ decision-making but also acts as a participatory tool, establishing a sustainable platform for heritage preservation, national identity reconstruction, and local economic growth. Finally, some strategic recommendations are proposed to integrate visual marketing strategies with sustainable urban development planning.
