Abstract :
Parks and recreational resources as a means to provide people a respite from the crowding and pollution due to industrial urbanism are essential in the human societies. In order to establish better parks and recreation areas it is necessary to systematically identify and assess the potential of available resources. Tourism, like any other industry is affected by supply and demand and a common method of tourism resource assessment is through the demand approach by conducting visitor surveys. In this method major components that contribute to the overall attractiveness of parks and lead to a satisfying experience are evaluated. In Iran, outdoor recreation demand has been estimated using interview and questionnaire. In this questionnaire, factors required in assessment of outdoor recreation demand are age, distribution, how to access, frequency and referral days, referral social patterns, occupation, education, referral motivation, stay length, access roads, recreation favorites, type of vegetation, overnight stay, access costs, users income, design, layout and recreational facilities and entry fee. After analyzing the collected questionnaires, park managers can develop their operations strategies and through better programming, planning, and marketing try to decrease influences of factors that limit people’s use of parks and recreational resources. Shiraz city has the capability to to become one of the largest tourist centers in Iran at the international level. The biggest obstacles to achieve this goal are political-administrative weaknesses, financial problems, non-specialized and inefficient management, poor infrastructure and the lack of advertisement. The current study attempted to identify and evaluate visitors’ preferences and classify the effective factors on outdoor recreation demand in Delgosha garden in Shiraz. Two types of questionnaire were prepared. One questionnaire was to evaluate the visitor s point of view about affecting factors on outdoor recreation and completed by 196 of the Delgosha garden visitors. The second was designed to evaluate the relative importance of major and minor effective factors on outdoor recreation which was completed by experts. Results of the first questionnaire showed that age, education level and income were significantly influenced visitor demands. Based on the results of the second questionnaire by using Expert Choice program, historical attractions was the most important criterion and facilities, tourism resources and accessibility were identified as other important factors. Finally, effective carrying capacity of Delgosha garden was estimated at about 148 (person/day) using data from the first questionnaire and climatic data from Shiraz Station. It was found that demands in this garden was lower than the carrying capacity during autumn and winter and in non-holidays and in spring and summer and on Fridays and holidays the demand exceeds the carrying capacity of the garden.
