Abstract :
Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), a gasoline additive to increase the gasoline octane number, is known as a groundwater pollutant. It has a high solubility in water, which may cause contamination in groundwater and surface water due to leakage from underground fuel tanks and pipelines. Despite its environmental benefits to decrease CO emissions, it became clear that this pollutant could cause many health and environmental problems. Its solubility is high in water and highly resistant to decomposition and biological degradation. Therefore its half-life is high in water. And it is known as a human carcinogenic contaminant. There are various methods for adsorption of methyl tert-butyl ether from aqueous systems, among which the adsorption process is an applicable and efficient method for the removal of organic compounds from water. The benefits of the absorption process are its ease of use and integration with other processes. This study deals with the issue of MTBE and its effects on water resources and represents an up-to-date review of the recent technologies to remove MTBE from water.
