Abstract :
Due to the increasing resistance of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics, researchers are looking for new herbal medicines as alternatives to chemicals and antibiotics. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial properties of Haplophyllum canaliculatum essential oil on the bacterial standard Staphylococcus aureus. The experimental study was performed on the flowering branches of Haplophyllum canaliculatum collected from natural habitats in Larestan city. Following extraction of the oils by Clevenger apparatus, constituents of the oils
were identified using Gas Chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus to the oils were determined based on disk diffusion method. The maximum and minimum inhibition zone diameters were obtained by treatment of the bacteria with 20 and 0.625 micro liter/ disk, respectively. The essential oil compounds of wicker herb in high concentrations have antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus strains. This may be due to the presence of phenolic and terpene compounds in the essential oil. Therefore, due to the high antimicrobial properties of the tested plant essential oil, a wider evaluation of other properties can be effective in its application in the pharmaceutical industry for pharmaceutical treatments.
