Abstract :
Toxoplasma infection is one of the most common parasitic infections between humans and animals. It is caused by a protozoan of the epicomplex and coccidia called Toxoplasma gondii and is widely distributed throughout the world. The development of mood and behavioral disorders has been considered by scientific circles in the world for many years. Hence, extensive research is being conducted in different parts of the world on the etiology of depression. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the serum prevalence of toxoplasmosis infection among patients with depression and to be aware of the possible association between depression and toxoplasmosis infection. In this study, 304 serum samples from patients with major depression referred to specialized psychiatric clinics in Shahrekord in the summer of 1394 and tested for anti-toxoplasmic IgG antibodies by ELISA. Demographic information was collected by completing a questionnaire and the results were processed and analyzed using SPSS ver.20 software and Chi-square test, Fisher s exact test and logistic regression model. A total of 304 patients with major depression participated in this study. The age of patients ranged from 17 to 76 years with a mean of 35.1 10 10.2 years. 204 patients (67.1%) were female patients and 100 patients (9.9) 32%) were men. Anti-toxoplasmic IgG antibody titer ranged from 0.7 to 7.9 IU / ml with a mean of 1.57 13 2.13. In total, the results of Toxoplasma test were positive in 110 patients, so the prevalence of Toxoplasma infection in these patients was 36.2% with a 95% confidence interval of (41.9 and 30.8).
