Abstract :
Manganese has various applications in different industries, including battery manufacturing, metallurgical, and chemical industries. In recent years, the use of low-grade manganese resources has gained more attention due to the depletion of high-grade manganese ores. Acidic leaching is a suitable processing option for low-grade resources, in which the presence of a reductant agent for dissolving manganese ore is essential. Various reductant agents including sulfur dioxide, hydrogen peroxide, iron sulfate, various microorganisms, and organic chemicals have been used in the previous studies. The use of plant-based agents is another option, where the reductant agent contains chemical compounds such as glucose and sucrose. The biocompatibility, affordability, accessibility, and the absence of chemical compounds are the advantages of plant-based reagents in leaching of manganese ore. In this regard, banana peels, tea waste, purified straw, dried leaf powder, molasses, and bamboo ash are among the plant-based reductant agents used in the leaching of manganese ores. Tea waste and bamboo ash have shown the highest and lowest recovery rates among them, respectively. The plant-based reductant agents require more reaction time and higher temperature compared to other reductants.
