Abstract :
Scholars during previous researches are always on finding methods to mitigate destructive effects of ground motions. One of these methods is isolation of structures from the base on the foundation level. On the other hand, in some situations constructing structures in the vicinity of faults is inevitable. These structures sustain severe damages due to near fault earthquakes. Hence, in the past decade many investigations are carried out on effects of near fault ground motions. In this study 3, 8 and 15 story intermediate moment resisting 2D frames under horizontal components of 7 far fault and 7 near fault ground motions are considered. These frames are isolated from the base by the Friction Pendulum System (FPS) isolator. The near fault ground motions have the Fling Step characteristic. The analyses are performed using the nonlinear time history Dynamic analysis method in SAP 2000 Software. Comparing the results, it is observed that near fault earthquakes demands are different from those of far fault earthquakes. The main difference is in the height wise distribution of seismic responses. The difference is more pronounced in 8 and 15 story frames. Therefore, looking the different nature of seismic responses of near fault and far fault ground motions and to prevent detrimental effects of near fault ground motions, more researches in this field are needed
