Abstract :
Any sudden change in the configuration or the loading of a power network causes power swing between the load condensations of the network. The apparent impedance seen by a distance relay may fall within its protective zone when a power swing occurs. Hence, In order to prevent the distance protection from tripping during such cases, a power swing blocking function is used with the distance relays. This paper describes a novel power swing detection algorithm based on the phase angle measurement of the current signal. Results obtained by simulations with Digsilent and Matlab software show that the proposed method is more effective than the conventional methods in achieving fast operation of distance relay during the power swing and fault occurring simultaneously with the power swing.
