Abstract :
Background and Aims: Numerous studies have investigated the effect of aromatherapy with lavender and damask rose on the depression. There is, however, little research investigating the effect of lavender and damask rose on depression in patients after open heart surgery. This study was conducted in Guilan province in 2017-2018.Method: In this randomized clinical trial study, 97 patients undergoing open heart surgery were randomly assigned to an intervention and control groups. In the intervention group, the patients were asked to inhale the lavender and damask rose randomly before bedtime, at night from 21:00 to 23:00, for 5 consecutive nights. The control group received routine nursing care in compliance with the hospital procedure. Data were obtained by demographic- clinical and Beck Depression inventory questionnaires. To analyze the variables, Chi- square, t-test, Kruskal-Wallis, wilcoxon were used. Results: During the 5-night intervention period, The mean score of depression in the aromatherapy with lavender group in women was 27.50± 8.51 and in this group was 31.64±8.22 before the intervention (P ≤0.001). Also, The mean score of depression in the aromatherapy with rose group in men was 16.86± 8.59 and in this group was 19.86±6.46 before the intervention (P =0.036).Hence, The results revealed that aromatherapy with rose and lavender fragrances cause significant changes in depression. Conclusion: Considering the positive effects of aromatherapy on depressive symptoms, this method can be applied as an effective complementary treatment.
