Abstract :
The unprecedented population growth, human activities and technological development, as well as urbanization, have led to a significant increase in contaminants. Among the organic contaminants, the release of oil compounds into the environment due to industrial activities and use of petroleum based products has led to the environmental pollution. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, alkylated PAHs, alkanoic acids and alkyl benzenes released from car exhausts include carcinogenic compounds which are highly toxic to organisms due to their mutagenic potential. In addition, the release of crude oil and petroleum products in the seawater during operation and transportation causes severe environmental pollution. Therefore, the development and implementation of advanced technologies to eliminate these pollutants is necessary. There are various techniques to remove the pollution resulted by petroleum hydrocarbons such as physical, chemical and microbial treatment. Bioremediation is a perforable technique for the remediation of hydrocarbon, because it is considered as cost effective, eco-friendly, and less disruption of the contaminated environment when compared to other cleanup methods. This study, gives a brief review of the efficiency of bioremediation, the metabolic process and limiting parameters of bioremediation process.
