Abstract :
As technology and science are developing, the importance of underground engineering has been arisen in recent century. Duo to dealing with expansion of urbanization, effects of climate change, natural disasters, environmental issues, the man in the world are more excavating to find fruitful underground spaces. This paper will discuss how to analyze different cases of underground spaces and their different applications throughout history. The residents of cities like Sāmen, Arzanfoud and Ouyi developed underground spaces which had a variety of functions within many years. For instance, they were used as a shelter in dangerous situations or even to hide defensive instruments of tribes. The theoretical principles of the research have been explained in 5 categories, then the information about these towns and their various uses in different age have been investigated. This paper is aimed to not only review some historical underground spaces but also emphasizes present and past use of subterranean spaces.
