Abstract :
Tehran city is built on the foothills of the Alborz range. Thus, river valleys in the city have a long history and they create special sights to see. Moreover, natural elements have always been valuable in Iranians minds and beliefs. Water, the rare life-giving substance in Iran, has a special place. As the major natural areas of Tehran, river valleys have a reminiscence effect on the citizens and travelers of Tehran and the natural, cultural, and religious position. This study evaluates the perceived value of river valleys as urban landscapes, especially for Tehran. The river valleys special cultural and historical values contribute to their natural and ecological value. The evidence suggests that not only Tehran s urban development plans do not account for the revitalization of these areas, but they tend to destroy and encroach on the river valley s boundary. By destroying such areas natural essence and objectivity, their cultural aspects as reminiscence would be erased from the citizens minds.
