Abstract :
This study seeks to identify and examine two strategies of audio-visual translation called Subtitling and Dubbing. To reach this goal, in the first step, a brief definition of audio-visual translation and its different types are given. Then, the history of screen translation is examined and a collection of descriptive and cognitive information about the emergence of subtitled and dubbed films and the advantages and disadvantages of each of them will be provided. Also, the types of subtitling and dubbing and guidelines for creating a good subtitle will be presented. After recognizing and getting acquainted with each of the audio-visual strategies, the comparison of dubbing and subtitling and the extent of their use in some films are going to be discussed. The results of the study indicate that there are many factors such as gender, age and economy in the selection of subtitled or dubbed films and one of them cannot be considered superior to the other. However, according to analysis of the results, it could be concluded that the use of subtitled films during older ages is more than dubbed films.
