Abstract :
This article delves into the perplexing interplay between sustainability and banknote tourism development, shedding light on the prevailing crisis surrounding this phenomenon. Banknote tourism, a niche segment of cultural tourism, entails the practice of visiting countries primarily to acquire and collect their banknotes as souvenirs. While seemingly innocuous, this practice has far-reaching implications for sustainability in both the tourism and banking sectors.
The paper identifies and analyzes the multifaceted dimensions of the sustainability conundrum arising from banknote tourism development. It examines the environmental consequences stemming from increased travel, including carbon emissions, waste generation, and ecosystem degradation. Furthermore, it explores the socio-cultural impacts, such as commodification of cultural heritage, exploitation of local economies, and erosion of traditional practices.
Drawing on empirical evidence and theoretical frameworks, the article highlights the intricate challenges faced by policymakers, tourism authorities, and banking institutions in reconciling the economic benefits of banknote tourism with its negative sustainability outcomes. The concept of sustainable banknote tourism is introduced as a potential solution, encompassing strategies for minimizing environmental footprints, promoting responsible tourism practices, and fostering local community engagement.
The findings underscore the need for a comprehensive and collaborative approach involving stakeholders from the tourism, banking, and environmental sectors. The article concludes by proposing actionable recommendations to address the sustainability crisis associated with banknote tourism development, emphasizing the importance of balancing economic gains with environmental and socio-cultural preservation.
