Abstract :
Since waste and indiscriminate use of non-renewable energy can be prevented through setting thermal comfort within the thermal range of the residents of buildings, assessing it is important to maintain environmental sustainability. Considering local buildings of the past that were very successful at creating thermal comfort to the residents, it can be concluded that in designing patterns of contemporary buildings, certain spaces have been eliminated including in-between spaces. Therefore, the present study aims at investigating the significance of in-between spaces in creating thermal comfort in order to maintain environmental sustainability in hot and arid climates which form 60 percent of the area of Iran. First, the range of thermal comfort of the residents in the hot and arid climate of Yazd is determined via logical reasoning method. Then, different types of in-between spaces in local houses of Yazd are defined through content analyses. Next, internal and external factors available in local residential building of this area are investigated based on analytical-adaptive method and via SWOT model in order to assess the significance and effect of in-between spaces in providing thermal comfort. Based on the findings of this study, the certainty of internal and external factors affecting the system is discussed, and the significance of in-between spaces in improving space quality, neutralizing probable threats from outside the building, reducing internal weaknesses of the building, increasing external opportunities and strengths, and providing thermal comfort to the residents is determined. Ultimate findings present various strategies to apply in-between spaces in designing contemporary buildings.
