Abstract :
The issue of protecting structure against blast loading is gaining interest in civil engineering. In this study the authors present a retrofitting scheme to prevent collapse of above-ground storage tank-liquid fuel oil system under blast loading. The proposed method to prevent collapse is summarized by retrofitting the steel tanks with vertical and radial stiffeners and cover plate. The computer program ABAQUS is used to model and analyze the steel tanks. The investigation results show the effectiveness of the proposed retrofitting method for the steel tank example in this study. Analysis results show that maximum plastic strain, maximum displacement and critical mises stress is decreased for the retrofitted models. Also results show that for the tanks subjected to the blast loading, the critical mises stress decreases with an increase in the oil levels.
