Abstract :
Background: Vitamin D plays several important roles in human body. Low serum 25(OH) D has been estimated to be in relationship with hyperglycemia, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Consequently vitamin D supplementation may have a role in controlling blood pressure. The objective of current study was examining the effect of vitamin D supplementation on blood pressure in prediabetic adults. Methods: In a 3-month randomized clinical trial, 120 eligible subjects were randomly assigned in vitamin D or placebo group; they were stratified according to the percentage of body fat mass in four blocks to receive 1000 IU/daily vitamin D or an identical placebo tablet respectively. Participants were adults aged 18 to 70 with prediabetes. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), serum 25(OH)D levels, BMI, waste circumference, percentage of body fat mass (FM), physical activity, sun exposure, energy and macro nutrient intake were assessed before and after the intervention. Results: in the intervention group serum levels of 25(OH) D increased significantly (from19.36±13.51 to 30.48±15.49, P< 0.001); systolic blood pressure decreased in vitamin D group significantly (p=0.002), but the mean changes from baseline were not significantly different between the vitamin D and placebo group. Conclusions: The daily vitamin D supplementation for 3 months has no effect on the blood pressure in prediabetic adults.
