An Application of Data Envelopment Analysis to Measure Efficiency of Inspection Stations

Abstract :
The concept of efficiency here is the capability of a unit in utilizing input to produce output. In the context of the inspection station, the units assessed are stations, where they control products and detect defects. This study attempts to provide a mechanism in measuring relative efficiency and performance of inspection stations on April and May for the year 2015 in Electrogen Company. The objective is achieved by establishing a set of efficiency indicator particularly in the aspect of relative efficiency covering both input and output factor of the stations. The input resources are number of non-conformity ІІ & ІІІ, number of inspectors, number of corrective actions. The output factors are number of tested pallets, number of non-conformity ІV, and number of inspections. The data collected were analyzed using non-parametric technique called Data Envelopment Analysis. For overall relative efficiency result, seven out of ten stations i.e. assembling, winding, injecting, sheet cutting, rotor lathing, cap lathing, centerless stations were found to be efficient and productive. The seven productive stations can serve as efficient reference set for the relatively inefficient station for potential improvement. However, inspection stations of die-cast, shaft cutting and pressing were found to be inefficient. This is probably due to their inability to maximize output and minimize input.
