Abstract :
The production of heavy and ultra-heavy steel parts such as choke valves and slag ladles plays a vital role in the energy, steel, and oil and gas industries. Given the high consumption of energy, raw materials, and pollutant production in processes such as casting, heat treatment, and machining, environmental assessment of these products is essential from an industrial sustainability perspective. This review article examines environmental assessment methods, including life cycle analysis, material flow analysis, and climate impact index. Software tools such as OpenLCA and databases such as Ecoinvent are introduced, and case studies related to steel and heavy parts production are reviewed. In the following, the challenges of implementing these methods in the Iranian industry, including lack of data, software infrastructure, and human resource training, are examined, and suggestions for improvement are presented. Focusing on the local conditions of the Iranian industry, this article suggests implementation paths for localizing environmental assessment in the production of heavy steel parts. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive picture of the current status and future directions for the sustainable production of heavy steel components in the country.
