Abstract :
Abstract  The challenge of managing intense solar radiation while maximizing thermal comfort in the cold and mountainous climate of Tabriz led to the creation of unique multi-colored sash windows known as “Orosi” in Qajar-era residential architecture. This study aims to investigate the spatial, photographic, and aesthetic qualities of “Chiaroscuro” and luminous contrasts generated by Orosi windows in two prominent historical houses in Tabriz: the Tanabi hall of Behnam House and the Shah-neshin hall of Heydarzadeh House. In this research, photography is treated not merely as a passive documentation tool, but as an active phenomenological and empirical scientific method to decode the light-atmospheres of architectural spaces. The theoretical framework relies on the sensory perception of space (Pallasmaa and Zumthor), the aesthetics of shadows (Tanizaki), and luminous contrast. The images were captured by the author (Amirali Navadeh Shahla) employing advanced High Dynamic Range ( ) photography based on Auto Exposure Bracketing ( ), spot metering on high-luminance colored glass, and tilt-shift perspective control lenses to preserve precise spatial geometry and avoid distortion. The findings demonstrate that professional photographic documentation of extreme light contrasts unveils how Orosi lattices function as dynamic thermal and visual regulators, casting geometric shadows that enhance spatial depth and intimacy. In Behnam House, the rectangular geometry and dominance of warm colors foster an intimate, inviting, and vibrant atmosphere. Conversely, in Heydarzadeh House, the semi-circular arches combined with contrasting cool and warm colors, coupled with specular reflection on the polished dark floor, generate a dramatic, spiritual, and mysterious atmosphere. This study concludes that specialized photography serves as an indispensable analytical tool in decoding the hidden phenomenological qualities of traditional architecture.
