Abstract
One of the most important strategies for governments to achieve sustainable development is to provide sustainable drinking water. Therefore, field studies on arid and semi-arid regions for the construction of underground dams have been considered by many researchers in the world. In recent decades, Iraq has experienced a sharp decline in groundwater levels, which has led the Iraqi government to pay more attention to the management of groundwater resources.
One of the most important methods in water resources management, analysis and feasibility of construction of underground dams
is. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the construction of underground dams by Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods. For religion, effective criteria including altitude, slope, geological formation, land use, distance from roads, distance from waterways, distance from existing water areas, vegetation index, temperature and rainfall were considered. The mentioned criteria were first weighed by AHP method using the opinion of experts. By combining the weights and information layers of each of the criteria, a map of potential areas for the construction of an underground dam in Iraq was prepared by ArcGIS 10.6. According to the resulting map, it was observed that the northern regions of Iraq have a better situation than other regions for the construction of underground dams. Finally, the selected regions were ranked and it was observed that areas with a relatively low slope have Annual rainfall is relatively high, and areas near waterways are the best places to build underground dams in Iraq.
