Abstract :
Seismic safety is one of the most important engineering challenges that can reduce many human and economic damages and hazards. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of Concrete-Asphalt Buttress (CAS) geometry on the seismic performance of the dam using the finite element method which has been done using Abaqus software. To study the effect of dam geometry, 4 Buttresses with heights of 103⸲ 96.5, 66.5 and 33.25 m were used. CAS material is asphalt concrete with a density of 2300 kg/m3. The results of research for the Dam-Reservoir-Foundation-Buttress model show that strengthening the dam with a retaining CAS in general reduces the amount of cracks in the dam. Cracking in the heel of the dam was created in the model without Buttress, which was not observed by applying reinforcing Buttress. There is a nonlinear relationship between the height of the concrete retainer and the reduction of seismic damage throughout the body of the dam as the height of the Buttress increases to 66.5 meters, the failure rate decreases and the cracking decreases but upper heights (96.5 and 103 meters height) increase the overall damage.
