Abstract :
Iran s architecture, since a long time, has been infused with light and its meaning in Iranian culture. The influence of daylight in Iranian architecture can be investigated and traced from the Urartian period and the later Median period until now. Light during the day and light at night, in addition to the technical, architectural, and functional aspects of Iranian architecture, have been mixed with the cultural, legal, and ritualistic aspects of light in Iranian civilization. Light is the meeting point of wisdom, technology, and architectural knowledge during the long-standing Iranian civilization. The tying of light in the architecture with the rituals of this land has given it a mysterious aspect or a symbol of purity and Ahura forces. And in contrast to darkness, in addition to a meaning in Iranian architecture, a demonic and sometimes negative aspect has been found. After the arrival of Islam in Iran, the wise view of Iranians had a tremendous impact on the meaning of light in Islamic architecture in Iran. In this article, the historical meaning of light in Iranian culture and its impact and translation in the historical architecture of Iran are discussed. And four ritual, technical, architectural, and ruling functions are reviewed and examined in this historical course. Islamic mysticism has a special understanding of light, which is even used in mystical literature to interpret and describe the architecture of religious spaces. Two basic approaches, shaping and giving meaning, are an important part of the experience of light in Iranian architecture throughout history. The purpose of this article is to review the historical meaning of light in the four aspects mentioned in Iranian architecture and culture. The research method is library and documents. The result of this article will refer to the review of the function and meaning of light in the historical history of architecture and its interaction with Iranian culture.
