Abstract :
This paper proposes a new metaheuristic optimization algorithm with the name of Artemia optimization algorithm (AOA). AOA is based on the simulation of the population and behavior of Artemia individuals. The minimum distances of each individual Artemia from high quality site for reproduction are considered as the objective function for the Artemia individuals. The algorithm has a very simple formulation where the basic idea is to approach the best solutions and escape from the worst solutions. In fact, AOA formulation is modified in this research in order to improve convergence speed and reduce the number of structural analyses required in the optimization process. The results of a trade study carried out on five classical structural optimization problems taken from literature confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm. The unique search features implemented in AOA are analyzed, and their implications for future research work are discussed in detail in the paper.
