Abstract :
Savonius wind turbine is one of the most suitable devices for use in urban environments. Low maintenance cost, low self-starting speed and proper electricity generation capacity are the reasons why this type of turbine is suitable. In the present study, the effect of secondary overlap ratio on the Savonius wind turbine performance is investigated. The values of the secondary overlap ratios (S/d) are examined in the ratios of 0, ±0.1 and ±0.2 for three wind speeds of 3, 5 and 7 m/s. The results show that, the maximum mean power coefficient in the secondary overlap ratio equals zero and increasing or decreasing this value reduces the turbine performance. Additionally, in all secondary overlap ratios, the maximum power coefficient occurs at a tip speed ratio (TSR) of 0.8 and increasing the amount of wind speed increases the mean power coefficient.
