Presence and Vitality in Local Squares: Exploring Factors that Foster Social Engagement

Abstract :
Urban vitality and dynamism stem from the active presence of people in public spaces, particularly squares. In other words, the meaning and significance of urban spaces emerge through citizen interactions and engagement. Consequently, one of the key indicators for evaluating the quality of public environments is the level of presence and user satisfaction within these spaces. Squares, as critical urban elements, not only serve as public gathering areas but also enhance social interactions and collective bonds through unrestricted accessibility. Given the diminishing influence of collective spaces on urban quality of life, this study aims to identify and analyze the key factors that promote individual presence in squares, contributing to the revitalization and vibrancy of urban life. This research is applied in objective and descriptive-analytical in nature. Initially, a theoretical review was conducted using a library-based approach. Subsequently, the factors influencing presence were subjected to rigorous analysis and categorization utilizing a survey method and field data analysis. Ultimately, this research succeeded in categorizing and articulating the key components that play a decisive role in enhancing and promoting presence in urban squares, exemplified by Mahan Square in Alborz.
