Production of Activated Carbon: Precursors, Activation Technologies, Structural Engineering, and Emerging Applications
Mahtab Abdi1 Zahra Zaghari2
Abstract :
Activated carbon (AC) is a highly porous carbonaceous material extensively utilized in adsorption, catalysis, environmental remediation, energy storage, and gas separation. Its performance is primarily governed by surface area, pore size distribution, surface chemistry, and structural morphology, all of which depend strongly on precursor selection and activation methodology. This review systematically analyzes recent advances in activated carbon production, focusing on precursor engineering, physical and chemical activation mechanisms, templating strategies, heteroatom doping, and sustainable synthesis routes. Comparative evaluation of activation techniques including steam activation, CO₂ activation, KOH activation, ZnCl₂ activation, H₃PO₄ activation, and emerging microwave- and plasma-assisted methods is provided. Structure–property relationships are discussed with emphasis on micro-, meso-, and hierarchical porosity development. Furthermore, recent trends in biomass-derived activated carbons, waste valorization, and carbon neutrality considerations are critically assessed. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives toward scalable, low-energy, and application-specific activated carbon design are outlined.
