Making Goal-Orientation and Criteria Selection Visible: An Evidence-Centered Design Pattern for Open-Goal Secondary Mathematics

Abstract :
Real-world mathematics tasks sometimes ask whether an option is “worthwhile,” “best,” or “most suitable” without specifying how success should be judged. In such open-goal tasks, students must specify a decision goal and decide which criteria should govern the decision, and those choices shape the mathematical work that follows. Assessments focused on correctness or final solution quality can leave these choices implicit. This conceptual paper develops an evidence-centered design pattern for supplementing the assessment of open-goal problem solving in secondary mathematics, designed for Grades 8-10, by making goal specification, criteria selection, and downstream traceability inspectable. Drawing on research on problem-state openness, mathematical modelling, and evidence-centered assessment design, and comparing the result with the closest assessment precedents, the pattern supports two local task-response claims concerning goal specification and the defensible selection and prioritization of decision criteria, then traces those choices through model, comparison, and conclusion checkpoints. It is a supplementary diagnostic layer intended for assessment and task designers, including teachers acting in that role, to accompany, not replace established assessment of mathematical correctness and modelling quality. Constructed responses illustrate its proposed application. The pattern has not yet been validated; reliability, fairness, cross-task generalization, and classroom feasibility require empirical study.
