Path Planning and Flight Control of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: A Review of Algorithms and Future Directions
Amirhossein Arefimehr1
Abstract :
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become widely adopted platforms for surveillance, precision agriculture, remote sensing, logistics, and disaster response, and the safety and efficiency of these missions depend heavily on the underlying path planning and flight control strategies. Rather than simply listing algorithms, this review is organized around a single practical question: which of these methods can actually run, in real time, on the resource-constrained companion computers and flight controllers carried onboard a real UAV, and how does each one interface with the control loop that ultimately flies the vehicle. The paper covers classical graph-based and sampling-based methods, minimum-snap and kinodynamic trajectory generation, artificial potential field approaches, bio-inspired and metaheuristic optimization, and learning-based methods built on reinforcement learning and other artificial intelligence tools, including current state-of-the-art real-time planners such as Fast-Planner and EGO-Planner. Each family is assessed for computational cost, optimality, adaptability to dynamic obstacles, and robustness, and its typical coupling with the flight control stack is made explicit, including the split between a companion computer running perception and planning at roughly 10-30 Hz and a flight controller unit running the attitude and rate control loop at roughly 100-400 Hz. The paper further shows how trajectory planners are integrated with low-level PID or model-predictive controllers to produce flyable, dynamically feasible paths, summarizes reported quantitative outcomes from the recent literature, and outlines recurring challenges such as real-time computation under limited onboard resources, energy-aware planning, coordination among multiple UAVs, and operation in GPS-denied or highly dynamic environments. Based on this review, directions for future research are proposed, including hybrid planning architectures, learning-based approaches with stronger safety guarantees, and standardized benchmarks for comparing planning algorithms across UAV platforms and mission types.
