Evaluating the Long-Term Resilience of Water Supply Reservoirs Using Remote Sensing Methods

Ali Barkhordari1 Mohammad Aref Nouri2

Abstract :
As intensifying climate change and rapid urban expansion place unprecedented strain on semi-arid hydrological systems, quantifying the dynamic resilience of strategic surface water infrastructure has become a critical imperative for municipal survival. This research implement an analytical framework—within Google Earth Engine (GEE)— to assess long-term resilience and spatio-temporal changes of three vital Iran’s reservoirs for drinking water supply (Lar, Taleghan, and Zayandeh Rood) from 2010 to 2025. The resilience of dams was assessed using the 6-month Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI-6) and Pearson and Spearman Correlation Matrices methods. To obtain the necessary information, CHIRP data and Landsat images (5, 7, 8, and 9) were obtained through GEE. Also, the water area of the dam reservoir was obtained with the Modified Normalized Water Index (MNDWI). To ensure temporal continuity against atmospheric cloud contamination, a validated localized linear interpolation algorithm was applied, achieving an exceptional Mean Absolute Error (MAE) margin of just 1.61 to 1.98 km². Furthermore, systemic vulnerability was benchmarked through a novel, empirical Resilience Index (RI), integrating maximum volumetric drawdown and temporal recovery capacities. Taleghan emerged as a highly stabilized and resilient dam (RI = 0.239), effectively buffering extreme climate shocks and restricting maximum surface decline to 28.06%. In contrast, Lar exhibited way down resilience (RI = 0.0006) by suffering a near-total 99.87% decline; crucially, its depletion proved statistically decoupled from natural precipitation patterns (p = 0.172), which indicates severe operational overdrive. Zayandeh Roud maintained an intermediate and highly climate-sensitive trend (RI = 0.102). Ultimately, these findings indicate that the resilience of these dams to arid and changing climate conditions is a matter of concern. Furthermore, increasing water withdrawal from these dams is now one of the most important subjects in water resource management and requires a paradigm shift in how the most important water reserves in Iran s major cities are managed.
