Abstract :
High-frequency ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging require piezoelectric transducers with high sensitivity, broad bandwidth, low insertion loss, and efficient acoustic energy transmission. Conventional lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics exhibit excellent piezoelectric properties; however, their high acoustic impedance (≈30–35 MRayl), compared with biological soft tissue (≈1.5 MRayl), causes nearly 84% acoustic energy reflection, limiting imaging sensitivity and spatial resolution. Although 1–3 piezoelectric composites have significantly improved acoustic matching and electromechanical performance, further optimization is required for next-generation biomedical imaging systems operating above 50 MHz. This review summarizes recent advances (2022–2026) in nanoparticle-enhanced 1–3 piezoelectric composites for advanced medical imaging. The evolution of piezoelectric materials, composite architectures, fabrication technologies, and lead-free alternatives is first reviewed. The underlying physical mechanisms responsible for performance enhancement including Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars (MWS) interfacial polarization, microcapacitor network formation, β-phase engineering, interface-mediated stress transfer, and acoustic impedance matching are then critically discussed. Recent studies demonstrate that conductive nanofillers, such as MXenes and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), enhance local electric-field distribution and improve the effective piezoelectric coefficient by more than 61%, while dielectric nanoparticles, including BaTiO3 and ZnO, promote electroactive β-phase formation exceeding 90% in fluoropolymer matrices. In addition, sub-wavelength nanoparticle-based gradient matching layers significantly reduce acoustic attenuation and enable operational bandwidths exceeding 170% for high-frequency transducers. Finally, current research challenges and future perspectives are analyzed, emphasizing multifunctional nanocomposite design, additive manufacturing, interface engineering, and environmentally friendly lead-free piezoelectric systems. These advances provide a promising pathway toward next-generation high-resolution ultrasound, photoacoustic imaging, wearable biosensors, and self-powered biomedical diagnostic devices.
