Investigating the impact of water-intensive agricultural product exports on the water crisis in Iran

Ayda Enayati1

Abstract :
Approximately 71% of the Earth s surface is covered by water; however, only about 3% of this amount consists of freshwater resources. Due to its location in an arid and semi-arid climate, Iran is facing severe water scarcity and drought. The agricultural sector accounts for approximately 74% of the country s total water consumption, making efficient water management in agriculture particularly important. One of the major concerns is the cultivation and export of water-intensive agricultural products, especially in water-scarce regions. The water consumed during the production of these products is exported indirectly in the form of virtual water. This review study investigates 20 major agricultural products in Iran, including apples, mandarins, oranges, watermelons, potatoes, cucumbers, barberries, pistachios, saffron, tomatoes, lettuce, pears, persimmons, sesame, maize, melons, tea, onions, kiwifruit, and strawberries. First, the virtual water content of each product (L/kg) was examined and compared. Subsequently, the main export destinations of these products were identified and analyzed. Finally, by comparing the virtual water content with export data, the impact of exporting water-intensive agricultural products on Iran s water crisis was evaluated. The findings indicate that the export of low-value, water-intensive crops, such as watermelon and tomatoes, results in the substantial loss of virtual water while generating relatively low economic returns. In contrast, exporting high-value crops such as saffron provides significantly greater economic benefits despite their virtual water requirements. Therefore, replacing the export of water-intensive, low-value crops with high-value, low-water-demand agricultural products, alongside importing highly water-consuming commodities, could contribute substantially to mitigating Iran s water crisis and promoting sustainable water resource management.
