Review on hydrogel applications for drug delivery in cancer treatment targeting

Abstract :
Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Chemotherapy is a common approach that has negative effects on healthy cells and tissues. Hydrogels have been widely used as a promising drug carrier strategy. Hydrogel Drug Carriers (HDCs) have fewer side effects than systemic chemotherapy and can deliver drugs to tumor sites for an extended period of time. Furthermore, hydrogels have superior biocompatibility and biodegradability, as well as lower toxicity than nanoparticle carriers. Smart hydrogels can respond to environmental stimuli (for example, heat, pH, light, and ultrasound), enabling in situ gelation and controlled drug release, greatly improving the convenience and efficiency of drug delivery. Here, we summarize the applications of hydrogels used for drug delivery in cancer treatment targeting and their associated delivery routes, as well as a review of recent research on smart hydrogels
