Polymer Concrete in Infrastructure: Composition, Properties, and the Role of Polypropylene Fibers

Abstract :
Polymer concrete (PC) is a composite material in which traditional Portland cement is wholly or partially replaced by an organic polymer binder. This mini-review synthesizes and compares representative studies to highlight key developments and performance trends. First introduced in the mid-20th century, PC has attracted growing interest for infrastructure applications because of its rapid curing, low permeability, and high durability. Unlike ordinary concrete, PC typically uses thermosetting resins (e.g., epoxy, polyester, vinyl ester) or, less commonly, thermoplastic binders that polymerize to encapsulate aggregates and immobilize additives and fibers. Because PC hardens through polymerization rather than hydration, it does not require mixing water and can achieve a dense matrix with excellent resistance to moisture ingress and aggressive environments. Contemporary formulations commonly incorporate microfillers (e.g., silica fume) to reduce voids, along with fibers (steel, glass, and synthetic) and nanomaterials to enhance strength, toughness, and crack control. In general, PC consists of a polymer resin matrix, well-graded aggregates, and fine fillers, with optional fiber reinforcement and nanoparticles to tune mechanical and durability properties. PC systems may be cement-free polymer concretes or hybrid variants such as polymer-modified cement concrete (PCC) and polymer-impregnated concrete (PIC). Overall, the reviewed studies indicate that polypropylene-modified polymer concrete is a promising high-performance material for durable construction in demanding service conditions.
