Comparison of percentage of monocytes in Iranian elite & amateur men karate-kas vs. non-athletes

Abstract :
Introduction. Exercise may cause changes in the body s immune system. In adults, Exercise is a powerful and natural stimulant for immune cells and Molecular adhesion. Monocytes are one of the important factors of the immune system that play an important role in inflammatory and intrinsic immune responses. Karate is one of the most popular Olympic martial arts, So, the aim of this study was to compare the percentage of monocytes (one of the immune system factors) in elite, amateur male karate-kas vs. non-athletes. Method. 75 men (mean ± SD), weight (70.95 ± 10.99) kg, height (174.61 ± 8.39 cm), age (27.87 ± 8.84 years) took part in this study. The samples were available on a voluntary basis and based on the karate championship level, they are divided into 3 elite groups (including all national team champions in international, Asian and global squads), amateur group (including all the provincial team heroes and ranked in national and provincial squads) and non-athletes (including all who did not have a history of exercise and in terms of weight, height, and age were similar to the other two groups). After obtaining the written consent of all participants in the study, (In seated mode, at a given time and in the diagnostic-laboratory) the amount of 5cc blood from brachiocephalic vein was taken. Blood Samples were collected in tubes containing anticoagulants EDTA and then frozen at -20°C. Blood samples were centrifuged to determine the amount of monocytes in the laboratory, blindly. ANOVA was used to analyze the differences between different groups using SPSS software version 22. Significance level was considered at P <0.05 level. Findings. The results showed that the average percentage of monocytes (mean ± SD) in elite men was 0.58 ± 0.20, amateur, 0.60 ± 0.15 and non-athletes, 5.90 ± 1.04 , which was different between groups, significantly (F = 127.84, P = 0.000). Tukey s post hoc test showed that there was a significant difference between the percentage of monocytes of elite and amateur groups with non-athletes (P = 0.000), but there was no significant difference between the groups of elite and amateur karate-kas (P = 0.985). Discussion. Although elite athletes are not clinically immune deficient, it is possible that the combined effects of small changes in several immune parameters may compromise resistance to common minor illnesses. Regarding the results of this study, it can be concluded that the decrease in the number of monocytes (from immune cells) in elite and amateur karate-kas should be important and needs to have clinical and prescriptive recommendations in relation to its definitive treatment.
